A:Song Dong: Waste Not

15 February – 12 June

Chinese artist, Song Dong known for his conceptual, poetic personal performances and installations, has his first solo exhibition in a major UK public gallery, Song Dong is installing the monumental work, Waste Not, in The Curve. Comprising over 10,000 items collected by Song Dong’s mother over five decades – ranging from a section of her house to metal pots and plastic bowls to blankets, bottle caps, toothpaste tubes and toys. The installation is a tribute to his mother, as well as a meditation on family life during the Cultural Revolution. The activity of saving and reusing objects of all kinds is in keeping with the Communist adage wu jin qu yong – ‘waste not’ – a prerequisite for survival during periods of social and political turmoil, but also a philosophy of those who lived through world wars and now has a currency in these troubled times of recession.

On the 15th feb there is also a rare opportunity to hear a talk by Song Dong. Learn more at the Barbican website.

A:Migrations: Journey into British Art

Immigration has been a political betting chip for some time now, with a large dose of pejorative public opinion thrown in. Seeing migration as a laudable element, Tate Britain today begins an 8-month exhibition exploring how British art has been shaped by migration.

Migrations features works from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to the modern day, where most of the output was created by artists from abroad including Antwerp-born Anthony Van Dyck and Swiss-Austrian Angelica Kaufmann.

Artists from this era were integral on formulating perceptions of the aristocracy, Britain’s establishments, such as the Royal Academy and race identity issues in the 1980s (Black Audio Film Collective).

Other artists in the collection include Steve McQueen, Zineb Sedira, Piet Mondrian, Naum Gabo and Laszlo Mahoy-Nagy.

A:Flamenco Festival London 2012

Choreographed dances were for a considerable length been categorised as a stiff British ballroom tradition, consigned to community centres and staggeringly formal underworld of events and competition. Thanks to a certain BBC show, however, a glamorous reinvention has occurred: dancing with a partner is popular and viewed as a dedicated past time.

Coinciding with the revival and 75th death anniversary of Flamenco dancing legend Federico Garcia, Sadler’s Wells is celebrating with Flamenco dance shows both contemporary and classic, musical performances and tributes with Flamenco Festival London 2012

Performances to look out for are leading flamenco guitarist Gerardo Núñez, the Antono Gades Company’s interpetation of Lope de Vega’s play Fuenteovejuna and Poet in New York performed by Rafael Amargo.

A:The Prince Charles Cinema

There are some films that are just meant to be seen at night. Whether it's the mood, the atmosphere or just the fact that you feel more comfortable watching something with a drop of alcohol in your drink. Whatever the reason - our friends at The Prince Charles Cinema have had the brilliant idea of showing hand picked films very late. It's an idea which evokes cult films but also some of the great scenes in cinema - imagine Taxi Driver without Travis Bickle's late night visits to some of New York's seediest picture houses and you wouldn't have the same film. Somewhat appropriately, The PCC have penciled in Drive as their first late Friday night flick. Starting at 11:30pm expect a full house one of the coolest films of the last decade. And if the late showing proves successful expect films from David Cronenberg, Russ Meyer and John Waters in the coming weeks. We couldn't be happier.

The date of the film is 20th Jan 11:30pm.

It's an intriguing and broad mix of instillations, sculptures and painting - reflecting elements of both punchy, stark propaganda and pastel, embellished paintings.

The collection of 21 artists is diverse and certainly worth a visit before it flies back to Baku at the end of the month.

A:The SHhhh! Collective

Hailing from Norwich, Sam Harrons is an artistic entrepreneur that launched The SHhhh! Collective, a street clothing brand as a 17 year-old skater boy. Beginning by selling hand-designed t-shirts out of a box in a style reminiscent of Only Fools and Horses’ ‘Del Boy’ to his friends at the skater park he decided to go one step further and enter a local Dragon’s Den competition. Having won, word on the SHhhhtreet spread and the SHhhh! iconic empty speech bubble trademark got people talking. A symbol that represents the feeling that ‘you can say anything’.

With a strong team behind SHhhh! Harrons’ branched out and began designing hoodies and hats with the logo imprinted, a permanent fixture throughout. Posters, stickers and cards made their way around town and club nights began to form with Harrons and his dedicated friends on the DJ sets.

Not stopping there, he wanted to bring forward other talent. With a vision of creating t-shirts that helped bring other artists work to the forefront, he introduced the 11 Artists Project in late 2010. 11 artists/ groups of artists designing 11 collections of t-shirts showcased per month, giving up-and-coming artists in Norwich the chance to display their work.

The project came to an end in September and to celebrate the success of the programme, an exhibition of The SHhhh! Collective t-shirts, including special edition LTD t-shirts are being displayed at Beach London, Shoreditch on December 22nd from 6pm-9pm. The exhibition will run until January 8th. Kooky SHhhh! stocking fillers will also be available to purchase to ensure Christmas SHhhhoppers festive lists are firmly ticked.

Following on from this, the official after party will be held at The Macbeth, with live music and Lucid on the DJ decks.

A:Signal Gallery: Punk and Beyond

Little did we know that nearly forty years on, the seeds planted by those early Punksters would flourish over the generations. Punk seems ever more relevant and attractive.

Evidence of this was the huge success of Signal Gallery’s 'Beyond Punk' show last year, curated by Gaye Black (from The Adverts). A wide range of people appreciated this show, which brought together artwork by well-known Punk musicians, including Poly Styrene and Adam Ant.

An upcoming second installment to this journey, 'Punk And Beyond' promises to be a very exciting expansion of the idea. Again curated by the iconic Gaye Black, we are now able to fill our new, bigger gallery space with more artists and artwork. The lineup promises to be even more varied and fascinating than the first show, with a wider range of both artwork and musical backgrounds. Fitting tribute will be paid to Poly Styrene, who sadly died of cancer earlier this year, with a series of specially commission portraits.

On the four Saturdays on the shows of the shows run, live music will be played in the gallery by several of the participating artists. This will be a show that celebrates the enduring creative potency of Punk. There will be a private viewing on November 24th and doors will open between November 25th and December 17th.

From August the 4th of this year, divers have had the opportunity to go 100ft below sea-level to view a set of 12 images wildly placed underwater on the hulk of the artificial reef that is sunken Air Force ship General Hoyt S. Vanderberg. A video about the gallery can be found on youtube.

The Vanderberg is a product of Austrian creative Andreas Franke, of Staudinger and Franke advertising, photography, postproduction and CGI team exhibiting his work at the very place he caught his ideas.

It is possible to view the exhibition with chartered boats out of Key West. The under water art gallery is located about 7 miles south of Key West, and visitors can expect to see 12 images depicting every day life scenarios from the past staged in the very same setting as the exhibition. The images are protected from water by a silicone seal and incased between sheets of plexiglas that are then framed in stainless steel.

Andreas had this to say about his images:

"Mystified scenes of the past that play in a fictional space. Dreamworlds, where you can get lost or you can identify with. This makes a new and unexpected atmosphere."

Allow yourself (if you dare) to be transported into the haunted world of Arthur Kipps as he recounts his story, in The Woman in Black. Mr Kipps is left terrified after attending a funeral, and it's not until years later that he recounts his traumatic experience... right in front of your very eyes, with a jumpy, spine-tingling story.

I've been to the theatre to see The Woman in Black several times, and each time it seems to get better and somehow scarier. Performed in the eery set of the The Fortune Theatre London, you are already feeling spooked before the curtain rises; a perfect setting!

With the release of the film version due in February 2012 starring Daniel Radcliffe, it should leave you well prepared, and I am sure the film will be equally as chilling.

The show has West End popularity of just over twenty three years, proving that this theatrical experience is a must. And what better time to attend than October... the spookiest month of the year!

Tickets can be bought here, and you can currently book up until 15th December 2012.

A:We Can Be Heroes

During the late ‘70s and early ‘80s Graham Smith was ‘house’ photographer to the decade-defining London scene that spawned the likes of Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Sade, Stephen Jones and Kim Bowen. He designed its record sleeves, cultivated its graphics and captured its characters. Smith’s photographs, most of which have never been seen before, bear witness to a riot of creativity that changed the face of music, fashion and clubbing forever.

With hilarious and provocative text by Chris Sullivan, an introduction by Robert Elms, forewords by Boy George, Gary Kemp and Steve Strange, plus 500 quotes from over 50 of the main faces from the scene, We Can Be Heroes will be far more than just a photo book. It will be the living history of a generation of pop stars, designers, journalists, artists and film-makers who adopted wild, theatrical attire and an ethos of continual change. The press dubbed these nightbirds the New Romantics; in truth this was just one stage of their endless reinvention.

Graham's book is available exclusively from Unbound, where authors pitch their ideas directly to their readers. When an idea has enough supporters, the book is written. Learn more here.

Journeying from Jimmy Cliff to Jay-Z via Mica Paris and Mary Wilson of The Supremes to David Bowie's bass player Gail Ann Dorsey, these images conjure up an alphabet of the music of the Black Atlantic.

This experience, which has been mooted as the ultimate treat for fashionistas, aims to celebrate both British fashion and traditional afternoon tea with

A:The Power of Making

The Power of Making is the V&A’s newest show in conjunction with the Crafts Council, documenting some of the best uses of craft practice today, from traditional methods for practical uses such as dry stone walling, to those for a purely aesthetic use such as sugar sculpting.

‘Craft’ often has connotations of an amateur approach to making, but the aim of this show is to put emphasis on the highest skill-level of making and to validate it as a design process in itself. It’s a process where an idea can be honed, and innovation can grow out of a mistake. As Daniel Charny, who curated the show said: “Making is a way of thinking”.

Some marvellous examples included the open-source 3D printing machine RepRap, which can replicate itself, something which may change the way we build and make things in the future. The many examples of open-source products on display, which were created by people using collective knowledge to improve or create products that were unavailable on the market (also referred to as ‘hacking’ products in the show) reflected an entrepreneurial spirit to their inventiveness.

Helen Klopper’s wool-filler for moth-eaten clothes is a case in point, a simple but ingenious method of repairing clothes, saving them from an otherwise costly repair or landfill. As traditional making skills disappear among arts schools, the show is a timely exhibition to encourage people in the importance of taking up new skills. Having ideas is great, but it's often easier to persuade someone to invest or be inspired by it if it comes in a well-made form. This free show runs until January 2nd and is well worth a visit.

The future home of the Design Museum at the former Commonwealth Institute building will be offering free public tours as part of London’s Open House weekend on 17 and 18 September 2011.

It will be the last chance for the public to see this remarkable 1960s site before it re-opens as the new Design Museum in 2014.

The museum’s move from its current site at Tower Bridge to High Street Kensington will triple the space in which to show its world-class collection, and greatly expand its education and public events programme. The move brings the Museum into Kensington’s cultural quarter, where it will join the V&A, the Science Museum and the Royal College of Art.

Deyan Sudjic, Director, Design Museum, says: ‘Lord Cunliffe’s original design epitomised Britain’s worldwide cultural heritage, and an age of experimentation. ... The building is a landmark of 20th Century modernism and I urge everyone to take the opportunity to explore it before the transformation.’

Saturday 22 October 2011, 7.30pm

English Journey: Re-Imagined

Featuring Iain Sinclair, Alan Moore, Shirley Collins and a band of musical mavericks

Barbican Hall

Tickets: £15 – 20

Produced by the Barbican

A 21st century happening inspired by J B Priestley’s survey of a troubled 1930s England

In this extraordinary concert, readings, performance, music and film intersect, complement and argue. Psychogeographer, writer and film-maker Iain Sinclair, hugely influential graphic novelist Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell) and legendary English folk singer Shirley Collins join a band of musical mavericks, including FM Einheit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Susan Stenger (Band Of Susans) and Mute Records’ Simon Fisher Turner, to cast a fresh light on the past and present of our once again troubled land.

The show features highlights from sold out events at Aldeburgh Music in Suffolk and the AV Festival in Newcastle exploring the culture and history of these unique English places. The second half will be a new London-centric summoning under the influence of Sinclair’s latest book, Ghost Milk: Calling Time On The Grand Project, as Sinclair brings his unique eye to bear on the Lea Valley area and the Olympics as well as on to the Barbican itself.

Last weekend I spent Saturday evening on the HMS Befast dancing to swing music as I like to do.  It was an event called Swing for Skin and was in of aid the charity DebRA, set up to raise awareness and funds for people with EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa).

TheLipstick & Curls team were doing vintage inspired make up and hair on all the girls, but are proud to be opening a parlour in Topshop’s flagship store on Oxford Street.

Lipstick & Curls  specialise in vintage beauty and hair. The company was established in January 2009 by leading hair and make up artist’s Amanda Moorhouse and Natasha Hall, who both have a passion for all things vintage so decided to join forces and recreate beauty from a bygone era, from the 1920’s to the 1960’s what we call good old fashioned glamour.  At Topshop, Lipstick & Curls will be offering a full beauty service. The sessions are all private, and with their vintage props, clothes, lighting and even professional tops on poses, their aim is to make the sessions enjoyable, unique and unintimidating.

Open in Topshop from Thursday 9th June.

A:Making Waves

The right conditions to take these photographs of seascapes only happen a few days a year, two or three at the most. I am looking for the sun breaking through dark moody clouds and big angry waves crashing at your feet. As the waves recede I run down the beach, take a picture, and run back, trying not to get the camera full of water. I took the first pictures in 2005.

A:Does My Bum Look Big in This?

I had heard about Lulu Guinness' giant pin installation at their press day, but nothing quite prepared me for the real thing.

We all know the mini version, an executive office toy to leave a hand print in, well this one is life size! When it comes to anything interactive I'm a sucker, so I didn't really have an excuse not to try it out!

I stood up against it and had to push quite hard, and low and behold my imprint came out the other side. What fun..I had several goes, but did look at my imprint and think..Does my bum look big in it? Well if it did, it was worth the fun.  Glad to know this wonderful installation will be shown at London fashion Week!

In the meantime check out photos of photos of people's imprints on the installation here. If you missed out Lulu Guinness' Be A Pin Up, you can relive my experience by watching me do it here.

A:Al Fresco Fine Dining

Chefs Mark Jankel and Jun Tanaka the talented boys behind Street Kitchen are, I'm glad to say back on the streets again. We mentioned them in October last year when they had a trial run at the London Restaurant Festival. Now they are up and running for good.

In a newly refurbished Airstream they are stopping at London locations and serving up restaurant standard food for the price of your usual takeaway, which is also cooked there and then for you, if you like, gourmet fast food. However the added bonus is that all the food is sourced directly from UK farms so it's fast food that is ethical and responsibly sourced.

So I went yesterday for lunch and had wonderful salmon with kohlrabi salad, crushed potatoes, beetroot and salsa verde and sat in the sunshine with friends and eat at a leisurely pace. Some people were just taking it straight back to their offices but we were all having a day off and instead of sitting in a stuffy restaurant we sat outside in the sun.

A pretty damn perfect way to eat restaurant quality food al fresco and on the go.

You can keep up to date with their locations with their website and follow them on Twitter.

A:Kipling x Peter Pilotto SS11

After their super successful and much talked about collaboration for AW10, Kipling have yet again teamed up with the Emerging Talent Award winners Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos for SS11.

Moving on from the powerful Galaxy adorned bags of AW comes the dreamy Milky Way print in tones of yellow, petrol and black. Embracing a youthful and retro vibe, this fun SS11 collection re-works styles from Kiping’s classic collection and re-introduces the mighty duffle bag.

Perfectly marrying the aesthetic of both visionary brands - practicality and unique print - the collection was described by the Peter Pilotto designer duo as inspired by their ‘thoughts of the intergalactic traveller, or otherworldly nomad, exploring and discovering’.

So the solution to this problem is the Roof Top Film Club, a new outdoor film experience showing all the classics, cults and guilty pleasures on the rooftop of Queen of Hoxton from 1st June to September this year.

Open 5 nights a week, you can enjoy iconic movies like ET, Ghostbusters, Labyrinth and Waynes World. There's even a 'Chick Flick Tuesdays' showing When Harry Met Sally or Bridget Jones's Diary. All on the big screen, wireless headphones and comfy chairs with great food, a cold beer to hand. I've got diary booked for Zoolander and Breathless. Which night will you go to?

Everything right down to the last doorknob, which incidentally used to be a curtain pole finial, has had a previous life before it was brought it to Hostem. James Brown, founder of Hostem, wanted his space to have a flare of individuality away from the former industrial space that it was. He chose interior designers, JAMESPLUMB for their sense to combine individuality with history.

When you walk into the store you can feel the stories that come off each gem that was salvaged from the side of the road, a skip or found at the car-boot sale, even the floorboards have aged timelessly.
Hostem offers everything for the London modern man, casual yet luxe streetwear paired with the niche, the unexpected and the directional.

Hostem can be found on Redchurch street, Shoreditch in East London, with designers like,Philip Lim, Casely Hayford, Adam Kimmel and more.

What a line-up…there Lee Scratch Perry (mad as a hatter dub) Group Doueh (everyone’s favorite Western Saharan psych group) Dent May (who plays some lovely ukulele) and Kurt Vile and the Violators (worth seeing for their name alone).

Animal Collective are a band of good taste and Brian Weitz of the band was also kind enough to pen some fine words on op-art for issue 16 of .Cent. The history of protest song is a pretty epic thing to cover. Where to begin? Where to end? How to place a disparate array of songs in context? What genres and movements to cover? Well - seeing as you ask – Dorian Lynskey has the answers.

His new book 33 Revolutions Per Minute condenses five continents and seven decades of protest song into 680 taut pages. His writing skips across genres and includes songs from afrobeat to anacho-punk to riot grrrl. Among those whose songs Dorian covers are Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, James Brown, The Clash and Yoko Ono – all favorites of .Cent’s former guest editor Keith Reilly of Fabric, who included them in his musical family tree in issue 15.

A:Candlelight with Tubo

With the Royal Wedding approaching, there's no surprise that a little more stress is added to what to get the royal couple. Unlike a birthday present to your friends, a gift voucher might not be classed appropriate, but something that creates a romantic atmosphere might be. And there's nothing more romantic than dinner by candlelight.

Nothing like your traditional candle holder, the the Tubois composed of three borosilicate glass tubes of different diameters, cut at different lengths and connected together. The central frosted tube containing a standard tea light candle can be slid up and down by a system of magnets.

This minimalistic piece was created by Pietro Viero, otherwise known as the 'glass master' for the 'Edition of 6'. The exhibition is a collaboration of six design studios working hand in hand with six craftsmen from the region of Venice, Italy.

A:Genre Defying Pop

World music is the territory of old men who took life-changing trips to India in their youth and now sit at home wearing sandals and hemp socks, right? Wrong. Over the past couple of years world music has gradually permeated western pop. There was Yeasayer and Vampire Weekend, who created their own fashionably jerky version of Afro-pop, and now Rainbow Arabia are here with a full-length album and a European tour.

The band are a two-piece from Echo Park, California, whose previous single, Holiday in Congo, was all day-glo pop wrapped up in warm African melodies. Their new single, released today, is called Without You and shows the duo taking a paired-down approach, with eighties synths, cascading conga lines and slow-burning melodies.

You can see them playing live throughout Europe in April and May, promoting their genre-defying album, Boy And Diamonds, which is release on Feb 28.

A:James Franco the Polymath

When most people discover their passion, they hone their talent in that specific field: artists make art; film directors make films; musicians make music.

There are, of course, exceptions to the rule, with the most recent (and prolific) being James Franco. Not content with being a Hollywood star, publishing a collection of short stories, presenting the Oscars and finishing his English PhD at Yale, he’s also recording an album with a drag artist AND his first European solo art exhibition has opened in Berlin.

The Dangerous Book Four Boys runs until April 23 and brings together short films, sculpture, drawings and photography. While this Friday his new film, the Ginsberg biopic, Howl, opens at cinemas. You can read the story of why the poem Howl was so controversial in the current issue of .Cent. For information about his current exhibition, click below.

A:Sportswear Does Tailoring

Founded by the Fila brothers in 1911, sportswear brand Fila celebrates 100 years of style this year. Famous for the "Settanta" tracksuit jackets (I love my red and blue ones!) and Bjorn Borg association, Fila marks its centenary with the Club Collection. Tailoring, cashmere and merino wool, all with a nod to the 1970s Montecarlo playboy, the Club Collection is available as of March 2011.

A:Made Up Face

I wanted to share with you my current inspiration, myself and photographer Jennifer Pattison are working together on a loosely themed project of natural light with black and white. As a painter I am using only black and white paints and Jennifer is working with natural light source.

We are not sure which direction it is heading, but every weekend we will continue to take photos of something that can not be pre determined until we have a collection of poses of all my beautiful friends splattered in paint!

A:Vintage Footwear Goes Denim

Terry de Havilland reworks the shoe that conjures up celluloid images of glamourous 1940s starlets in Dior at the railway station: the platform lace up bootie.  De Havilland's spin: a peep toe, a stiletto and a collaboration with Paige Denim using premium denim, totally breaks the rules for a shoe that would have traditionally been in suede/ leather/ luxury skins and would have given workwear denim a wide berth.  In chic olive or grey and with sexy and attention to detail shoes like this (check out the wing tip collars), we salute Terry de Havilland and Paige for breaking the rules.

Waiting list open.  Available exclusively from March 2011 at Donna Ida

A:Luna & Curious Moves In Style

To celebrate the opening of our new store, instead of the usual party, we decided to have a marching band procession from the old shop on Brick Lane to the new one on Calvert Avenue as they're very close to each other. Everyone was invited to bring a drum, triangle, recorder - anything that makes a noise and to join the celebrations by marching along with us. We wanted to create a fun and inclusive event to launch our new shop.

The party continued with hot cider and ginger cake served all day with a make up artist embellishing guests with our favourite paper eyelashes by design brand Paperself.

Luna & Curious is open daily 11am ~ 6pm.

24 - 26 Calvert Avenue, London E2 7JP

A:A Brand New LV

Heritage brand Louis Vuitton, founded 1854, renowned worldwide for it's luxury ready to wear, accessories and luggage, reaches out to a younger and street-chic audience with it's fashion jewellery collection for Spring/Summer 2011. With 4 different lines to choose from ranging from florals, dainty pieces with an eastern feel, faux gem stones through to harder rock chick metal plated pieces (my favourite, the tusk has my name all over it!), there's something to give every girl a touch of luxury.

A:Reshaping the Wellie

When I think of Hunter I think of Wellington boots. Standard issue footwear in both world wars and suppliers to the Royal household, there are few brands that can boast such a long tradition. In recent years wellies have made the transformation from utility item to coveted fashion accessory and festival favourite. Hunter are now taking a bold new step into the future, out of the muddy field and into urban life, with the release of their first high-top sneaker.

The Millbank brings the practicality of a Hunter rubber boot to a high-top trainer style. Full rubber with a leather finish, the new sneaker style comes in a range of vibrant colours and metallics.

For both men and women, the Hunter hi-top will be available from March 2011 at a RRP of £70.

A:Legendary Rules

For those who haven't visited The Aubin Gallery, Aubin and Wills, and Aubin Cinema, now is your chance. All contained within a converted post war office, The Aubin Gallery specialises in promoting British young creative talent.

Contemporary artist, Adham Faramawy works in digital video, print, performance and sculptural installation. His work deals with narrative, spectacle, conspiracy theories and the occult. LEGEND II is Faramawy's solo multimedia exhibition exploring the notion of narratives and legends. I found it very easy to immerse myself in one of the video pieces, which are deliberately pixelated in its execution. Dance clips edited so they've lost their original context, repeated and hashed together in an hour-long spectacle of movement and drama. A rising star to keep your eyes on!

LEGEND II is on The Aubin Gallery till February 19th.

A:All Shook Up

Men’s t-shirt label t-lab’s launch design ‘01 Kitchener’ was inspired by 60’s psychedelic design - an approach which broke and shook up the rules of the previous, post war decade. British psychedelic design, unlike its American counterpart, mixes icons from our imperial past (think Sergeant Pepper or Monty Python cartoons) with colour and shape inspired by music and other rule breaking indulgences of the time. 01 Kitchener is also indulgent in itself - a six colour screen print onto soft heavyweight 100% cotton and comes on two base colours - white and maroon. As with all these collectable shirts, each design (01 - 07 to date) has its own number printed on the sleeve.

A:She is Back

.Cent favourite and contributor Ann Sofie Back returns with her fourth collection for Topshop. Those who were lucky enough to go her Second Life themed AW10 show will recognise the tulle ruffle detail, now making an appearance on jersey and mesh separates (pictured). The second mini collection includes striped jersey pieces, twisted and gathered to create a completely different aesthetic.

We love how Ann-Sofie always manages to do something unexpected, breaking the rules of everyday wearable fashion.
